:)
i like to live my world in possibilities.
though i know most of the time, the things i hope to have won't come true, or might not happen, living my world in such possibilities give me great hope :)
each day i live with a keen awareness of the ugliness of life and human nature. each day i see the ugliness of systems around me.
and each day i understand the possibility of beauty within that ugliness.
it's like seeing a flower grow out of concrete.
or of finding a growing seedling covered by the ugly soil.
i've grown recently to understand that it's important that each person takes responsibility of his/her own actions.
sometimes there's a tendency within us to want to protect the person. it's fine to protect. but not to overprotect.
ultimately, at the end of the day, each person takes responsibility of his/her own actions. there's always a consequence to each action we take. be it a positive or negative one.
God's grace covers us through many situations which we stumble though :)
but let's not take God's grace for granted.

Sometimes when i look through counselling connection, i'm just super amazed, and a little awed. hahaaa.
it's like.
wow.
as a counsellor, i'm supposed to know all these? O.O
and to be able to help my clients in all these areas as well? O.o
my goodness.
i can't even manage my life well enough. HAHAHAHA.
it's amazing and encouraging :)
touch is the essential element to keeping a relationship vibrant and alive, communication is the other:)

Think this happens to some of us who're in dysfunctional families.
do take note :)
The Hero, who is usually the oldest child, is characteristically over-responsible and an over-achiever. The Hero allows the family to be reassured it is doing well, as it can always look to the achievements of the oldest son or daughter as a source of pride and esteem. While the Hero may excel in school, be a leader on the football team or a cheerleader, or obtain well-paying employment, inwardly he or she is suffering from painful feelings of inadequacy and guilt, as nothing he or she does is good enough to heal his family's pain. The Hero's compulsive drive to succeed may in turn lead to stress-related illness, and compulsive over-working. The Hero's qualities of appeasement, helpfulness and nurturing of his or her parents may cause others outside the family to remark upon the child's good character, and obtains him or her much positive attention. But inwardly, the Hero feels isolated, unable to express his or her true feelings or to experience intimate relationship, and is often out of touch with his or her own sources of spirituality.

Helping others to grieve :) (from Counselling Connection)
You may be reading this series wondering how to help someone close to you, grieve the loss of their loved one. Some people have firm beliefs about the grieving process and what should and should not be done when assisting others. Generally speaking, there are some myths about grieving which should be considered when assisting the bereaved.
Myth: People who are grieving don’t want to talk about their loss, and bringing up the name of the deceased should be avoided.
Don’t be afraid to talk about the deceased or mention his/her name as it is probable that the bereaved person will want to talk about it.
Myth: Keep the bereaved person busy in order to avoid them thinking about the deceased.
If the bereaved person is kept too busy, the grieving process could be delayed. They need to have a healthy balance of alone time and time with people who can support them.
Myth: The grieving period is lasting too long and the person should be over it by now.
The grieving process is individual to each person and dependent on many things. These may include the type of relationship with the deceased together with the level of support available to the bereaved. Other stressors in the person’s life may also hinder the grieving process.
Myth: The bereaved person appears to be OK, so I will avoid any mention of their loss when I see them.
Some people feel very uncomfortable mentioning death or even being around people who are grieving. It is not only important to keep in contact with the bereaved, but to acknowledge the loss.
Myth: A person who is not showing signs of grieving is probably coping well.
Sometimes people avoid grieving publicly because they believe they have to be brave for the sake of others. By holding back their emotions, they are more than likely delaying the grieving process which can be unhealthy for their eventual recovery.
Many of us find talking to someone who is grieving, extremely difficult. It may be so difficult we decide to avoid the bereaved person for a period of time. Here is a list of helpful tips to remember.
1. DO use the deceased person’s name
2. DO talk about the deceased person. Keep memories alive by looking at photos, recognizing anniversaries and commemorating the person.
3. DO share you feelings with the bereaved. Be honest about your fears of saying the wrong thing, but be there anyway.
4. DO provide opportunities for the bereaved to express their feelings.
DO be patient with the bereaved.
5. DON’T use euphemisms like ‘passed away’.
6. DON’T say things like “you must be brave” – people don’t have to be brave, they should be allowed to express their emotions.
7. DON’T say “you should be better by now”. There is no timetable for grief.

i guess.
that it's a little saddening.
to see.
this.
happening.

i wanted to blog about how these few months have been for me.
but am not sure where to start.
and how to start.
'cos i don't want it to sound like an excuse.
but yet i don't want to belittle its effect on me either.
i guess having people who identify with me in the workplace helps.
it helps me to realize that i'm sane. i'm not being over demanding. i'm not being overly critical. i'm healthily adjusting. the flaws i see in the workplace, are the flaws others see too.
thank God.

I took the time to clear my wallet :)
now it's flatter.
and then I cleared up a bit of my room :)
now one small part looks cleaner and neater.
and i took out my bank box and deposited money in it. as a reminder to fill it up.
now it looks quite delighted sitting on my table :)
and i read a few counselling articles :D
and saved a few nice articles (eg. from yizhong's blog and from counselling connection).
i'm driven by internal motivations.
i can expand a lot of energy doing something which i find worthwhile, or am interested in, or finds meaning in.
for example.
i loved studying psychology 'cos of what i learn from it. the fact that i could nicely apply what i learn in psychology to the people around me made me happy as well.
i realize that i can't really be driven by external motivations.
i can't just study very hard to get good results (good results don't mean much to me), or to get a good job for money (which doesn't motivate me much either), or just 'cos deadlines are coming up.
as such, i don't really care about a lot of things. lol. which is not exactly very good =) and not exactly very pleasing to God :)
God is a strong external motivation for me though. hahahaa.
i feel most motivated at night, but only when i'm awake enough to be motivated. body has naturally been conking out from 12.30am (except for today.. possibly 'cos i was clearing out my wallet then), and waking at 4, then sleeping at 5, and waking at 6.30 or 7am. which kinda left me with much fatigue and grogginess. hahaa. and of course, when you have work the next day, you can't really do much things at night without remembering tt u have work the next day on ur mind :)
but at the end of the day
it's about stewardship.
of what we've been given.
of time, money, the talents that we have, the position we're in.

From Counselling Connection:
Journaling as a Tool to Reduce Stress
Journaling is a way of tracking the development of our thoughts and feelings. It enables us to not only record our journey but also to write down our goals and our plans on how to reach those goals.
The journal is a very powerful tool which assists us in recording our perceptions. The Journal, as the name implies, leads us on a journey which helps us to reveal our true selves. We are not simply recording our experiences as in a diary.
With a Journal, we are going beyond simply recording what “happens” in our lives to a process of transformation into our highest concept of ourselves and allowing a healing to take place. A journal helps us to discover ourselves and our higher purpose. By combining the tool of journaling with all the other tools we have discussed, we will reveal the essence of our being is love, life and laughter.
Research has shown that journaling merely fifteen minutes each day, can improve one’s health and one’s stress levels. There is a correlation between the expression of thoughts and feelings and one’s sense of self worth. The stronger you express your feelings, the greater the transformation through the journalling process and thus the greater the reward.
The purpose of our journals is to help us express our thoughts and feelings in a deep, intimate and personal way. Our journal may include descriptions of our daily interactions with others and the feelings that arise out of those interactions.
The key factor is to understand that we are a part of the equation. Events may happen far away from us, but our day to day personal experience is something we are taking part in. We can work through painful memories, or events in our lives, or scribe joyful experiences.
Both painful experiences and joyful experiences give us a great insight into how we are living our lives and how we can make new more empowering choices in the future and be happy with the choices we made in the past that got is to the place we are today. All thoughts and feelings are important to the process of your journal and no entry is too big or too small.
It is probably best when we have a flexible approach to our journals and include pictures that we find, or make, sketches, articles from magazines and books and quotes from people in our lives or historical figures.
Often people will ask questions of themselves in their journal and then as they add to their journal, they answer these questions. The important thing is that we are able to express ourselves and allow for the journal to be part of our journey revealing our path and empowering us to see ourselves more clearly and make choices that are more empowering.
The depth of your writing is not as important as the process and putting pen to paper, or fingers to the keyboard. Our goal is personal discovery and positive transformation knowing that “as we change our minds, we change our lives.”

-desiderio domini
how dearly i long to be
with You Lord, at Your feet
desiderio domini -
there are times when i really long to be with God. to just listen to Him, to just be with Him in His presence, to love Him, adore Him.
To just rest in Him.
To just be with Him.
overwhelming.

On a more serious note.
I guess there's a need, especially for leaders, to be above reproach as well. To be walking right in the ways of God.
that when a leader is asked to step down, as fellow brothers and sisters, we should also give grace and support to the sister or brother :)
we're all human afterall.

woke up with this song in mind
-You are, the love of my life
You are the hope that i cling to
You mean more than this world to me
I wouldn't trade You for silver or gold
I wouldn't trade You for riches untold
You are
You are my everything-
lol.
specifically the lines of
- I couldn't take one step without You
I don't have the strength to make it on my own -
woke up feeling really tired. hahaa.
accumulation of work and things to do :)
and lack of sleep.
the other counsellor's not in school today, so i feel more relaxed. hahaa.
wanna finish all the overdue stuff by today >_<
hmm.
i enjoyed worship prac last night :)
think i miss worship prac! hahaha.
was thinking also of the need to be above reproach in our lives.
quite hard hor :)
by the grace of God.
can see a lot of my flaws and weaknesses since i've stepped into the working world :D
irritating and interesting at the same time.
lol.
and surprisingly, i'm just viewing it with an evaluative mindset. it's time to step back in and change! :D

Just got to know today accidentally that one of my colleagues won't be staying in the school. O.o feels a little stunned. lol. oh wells.
i wonder how many changes of staff i'll see as i continue to stay in the school.
-and i'm standing at the bottom of the wishing well-
Maybe after being a counsellor, i should try to see if I can be a youth worker instead. it'd be interesting i think. and also 'cos one don't have to keep thinking about boundary issues. lol. or about unconditional positive regard. but then again, i prob won't be satisfied, 'cos there won't be deep issues to tackle with the client.

I think dabbling in student's lives is a pretty interesting thing. lol
i particularly find negotiations interesting. between students, or between student and parent, or between student or teacher..
lol.
and i think it's really interesting how people will determine how you're like. like for example, sometimes students think that i'm quite free and have nothing to do. lol. some of them wanna counsel me. but the other general impression is that i'm a nice teacher (i'm not a teacher!), that i listen to them, and thus they respect me for that.
that was really an interesting realization. lol. then u realize that wow, u actually have 'power' over students. that when u tell them to do something, they'll do.
and tt's scary!

Thought this was interesting :)
I’ve had three of my own children and spent my professional life thinking about children. And yet I still find my relation to my children deeply puzzling. Our love for children is so unlike any other human emotion. I fell in love with my babies so quickly and profoundly, almost completely independently of their particular qualities. And yet 20 years later I was (more or less) happy to see them go – I had to be happy to see them go. We are totally devoted to them when they are little and yet the most we can expect in return when they grow up is that they regard us with bemused and tolerant affection. We are ambitious for them, we want them to thrive so badly. And yet we know that we have to grant them the autonomy to make their own mistakes. In no other human relation do we work so hard to accomplish such an ill-defined goal, which is precisely to create a being who will have goals that are not like ours.
Saw this on a post titled 'One nagging thing you still don't understand about yourself' from a psych website hahaa. they got psychologists to write on that topic. pretty interesting read i feel :)
it can be found here
Enjoy :)

Was watching an anime today...
which showed that small miscommunications can lead to very strained relationships.
when maybe all that's needed is for the people involved to sit down and talk, to convey what they need to convey
sometimes it could be due to the fact that maybe one thinks that the situation won't change regardless of the communication. or perhaps they just don't know what to say. or how to say. or when to say.

Singing KTV brings back a lot of memories :)
It reminds me of my first cg in nus grp, when jiexian was still around, when huanyan will sing lots of jay zhou songs 'cos he likes to rap. hahaha.
reminds me of the time when melody joined us for ktv at partyworld. when nexus still had partyworld. lol.
reminds me of the time when we went to joo seng and sang, and you were still around.
reminds me of your first time at ktv with us. LOL. at cystalbell :) the deers' first ktv session together :P after a super long time.
and just seeing some song titles, or the names of some artistes, will remind me of certain people who were with us, but are not anymore.
yesterday night's ktv will be another memory of its own :)

“Physical touch is a powerful communicator of love. In a time of crisis, more than anything we need to feel loved. We cannot always change events, but we can survive if we feel loved.”
amen :)
I took the opportunity to fill up my emotional tank today :D hahahaa.
shall share next time more on this language of love (mine!). hahaha.
but meanwhile, to share an incident about how physical touch can make or break a person... there was a period of time in 2005, before I came over to uni group, that i felt quite down and out 'cos of certain things in my life that happened and i didn't get the chance to resolve. in my super down and out time, there was a service when out of nowhere, no idea why, shirley (melinda) came to me, gave me a solid pat on the back, then just walked off.
lol.
i think that pat probably was one of the main reasons as to why i continued to stay on in Hope after that :)

The troublesome thing about the school system is that it requires instantaneous results. It's result focused. Singapore's system is result based. Sadly.
But as what my individual supervisor said, that's how we get things done so fast.
Of course, in the meantime, we neglect a lot of other things as well.
I guess in a sense, we gotta be patient to see the mental health sector continue to grow ba. I always remember how Dr Tang (or is it Dr Lynette Ng) told us that the mental health sector in Singapore is 50 years behind that of America's.
Sadly, there are still many people who do not know what counselling is and use the word loosely. To many people, including myself before I formally went through training, counselling is talking. As long as you talk to the person, you listen to the person, that's counselling.
That's not counselling.
The following is taken from the Singapore Association for Counselling
Professional Practices
Counsellor’s are professionals who have significant post-graduate training in counselling theory and skills training OR its equivalent through on-the-job experience, in order to provide safe, confidential, and relevant services to the public who approach them for such services. The professional practices and ethics of counsellors should include and is not limited to the following:
1. To do no harm.
2. Counsellors tend to be people who have a genuine interest in others and like to develop a helping relationship.
3. Respect of the other person/s, regardless of their issue/s.
4. Use listening skills and interviewing skills to understand the counsellee.
5. Adhere to ethical approaches
6. Practice confidentiality
7. Keep boundaries
8. Keep professional relationships
9. Shares training, approach and orientation.
10. Participates in Professional Membership
11. Actively upgrades with Continuing Education
12. Abide by existing laws of the land
What Counselling is not:
While a lot of counselling is a dialogue between two people or more, a Counsellor must ALWAYS maintain a professional, objective position in the counselling relationship. Therefore, it is generally discouraged for a professional counsellor to counsel a person that he is related to or has an existing relationship or is an acquaintance. If a counselor proceeds in such a situation, it is called “a dual relationship” and could affect the objective input of the counsellor. If a counsellor is approached by an acquaintance/friend/relative, he/she should consider a referral or simply assist on a personal level but not on a professional level. Generally, I advocate the following to indicate what counselling is not:
1. Telling a person what to do
2. Passing judgement
3. Moralizing
4. Encouraging dependence
5. Taking sides between couples
6. Boosting someone's ego
7. Giving advice
8. Solving other’s problems for them(People have the capacity to solve their own problems!)
Yup.
I think one of the reasons as to why people may not know what counsellors do, is due to the fact that confidentiality has to be kept within a session. The lease I can do, is to let the people I know what counselling is about :)
Of course, the best way that you can know what a counsellor does is to actually go through a counselling session yourself :) It's quite therapeutic!

Having said all that...
i think i might really be falling sick.
my temperature have been going up and down and up and down.
and the headache has been coming in on and off and on and off.
i hope i dun have a bloodclot in my brain. then suddenly faint and go into coma and die :X

:)
think these days i may be looking too much to my own needs. my own desires.
and i forget the very basic biblical principle that
he who refreshes others will himself be refreshed (proverbs 11:25b).
stupid hor :)
i also think i'm quite dumb to forget about tt basic principle :)
sometimes i really feel like grumbling
hahaha.
like how come i'm new to the working life and i'm facing with such interesting stuff. hahaa.
i guess if i want to complain and grumble, there's lots to complain about.
but won't solve the problem also :)
"We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair." (2 Corinthians 4:8).
at least if i try my best in the situations i'm in:) i am accountable to God :)
i guess that's most important ba.
for my life is not my own anyway.
and if Jesus is coming back soon, i sure dun want to be in a state of unpreparedness when He's back :)
but i guess i'd still rant at times :)
hahahahahaa :X

recently i don't feel like i'm 23 years old :)
-take my life
take my everything
take my heart
take every part of me
gotta give my heart my life to You
and i'll never stop
never stop giving my life to You!-
so it's good to be crazy once in a while :)
to just let the sang side of u come out.

Isn't it odd sometimes.
that there are things that seem to be real, but actually are not?
illusions are their name i suppose.
that there're so many things in the world that from far, look like what it was supposed to be. but as you go near, you realize that maybe it's not afterall :)
and then you wonder why you ever went near in the first place.
perhaps it's to realize for yourself what it actually is.
or maybe it's better to just not go near in the first place.
and keep that delusion (oh. now it's delusion) so that things will not get so complicated afterall :)

a wait with no certainty.
this recent week has been filled with topics of death and grief.
the many natural disasters that have happened in the past week.
the things that happen to our personal friends, or ourselves.
a primary school friend's brother's death. a fellow classmate's diagnosis of stage 3 lymphoma. sensing a fellow classmate's suppressed grief over a death of a student due to the need to be professional. your own suppressed sadness. all within a week.
:)
sunday is a day of rest :) (but i got transcripts to do :( )
haha. ah wells :)

Glory is here - Michael Gungor
Someday You’ll come.
Darkness will cease.
True light will dawn, everyone will then see everything new
We’ll finally see You.
Awaiting that day, searching for more
While along You are found with the poor.
Help me to see
You’re all around me
Chorus:
Our praises arise
As we come to recognize
Jesus is near
Glory is here
In oceans and hills, and in ancient skies;
Hidden in faces and pain and delight; glory is here,
And I get a glimpse of You.
In silence and prayer; in bread and wine;
Somehow the common become the divine.
You’re making me new.
I’m starting to see You.
Chorus
Glory is here
Our praises rise
Our praises rise
Whoa, whoa, yeah
Chorus
Your glory is here
Your glory is here

Type ‘A’ Behaviour and Needs
Persons who generally demonstrate observable Type A Behaviour may be described as having stronger needs for self-recognition and, therefore, their behaviour and their needs would be described as following:
General behaviour
Enjoys being the centre of attention
May spend a lot of time on self- presentation
May not work well in groups, but may when it involves reporting
Tend to be dominating and controlling
At work
Tends to work better on short-term projects
May not work well in groups but does enjoy reporting
May need regular encouragement to keep interested
Excellent performer where personal skills are needed
In social life
Likes to be the centre of attention
Would probably have interests where he/she can be ‘seen’ to do well
May sometimes come across as being ungracious
Will often be the life of the party and a great entertainer
Will probably be the one who arrives last and is best dressed
In love
Needs to be flattered, and is proud and passionate
Could not handle criticism or being relegated to second place
Demanding of attention and probably domineering
Do not expect attention when this person is otherwise occupied

2 interesting things I've observed recently/has happened to me recently:
- bus stopping at every bus stop and opening its doors when there was no one at the bus stop.
- spotted two guys sleeping on cardboard boxes behind a shop in toa payoh while walking home..

Starting to wonder if i've done too much affective interventions for the day :\
had to 'hold' a crying client, then an angry client.
and during lunchtime, was listening to an angry colleague.
lol.
got quite tired after that. but still had to do work :\ and had to explain to a parent while her child was going through counselling.

Got this from Counselling Connection
'Sometimes you’ve just got to do nothing but lie in bed in a fetal position and be a miserable wretch. Try not to spend more than one complete day doing this. After twenty-four hours of said behaviour, you should try to move a little.
----
These are often at the root of some people’s difficulty establishing intimacy. A person who has experienced a great deal of hurt as a child will often find it hard as an adult to trust their partner, however much they may be in love. Examples of childhood pain that affects adult relationships include long-term conflict between parents, physical or sexual abuse, or a loss or death that was never properly accepted and grieved.
Such experiences can lead to a child having poor self-esteem, a basic doubt about whether or not he or she is worthy of love. These doubts can be carried into adulthood, making it very difficult for the person to open up to someone else in case they are rejected and their doubts are confirmed. Intimacy does not happen by magic. It must be built up over time.
This takes some people longer than for others. Often the harder you work at intimacy, the more valuable and rewarding it is. '

hahahaha.
saw this on yizhong's blog.
A couple was having dinner at a restaurant. Then there was this chio and scantily-clad gal walking past. The husband's eyes (head didn't turn) fixed on the gal as she walked past.
After she walked past, the wife said to the husband,"is she worth the trouble you are going to get now?"
not bad. good one.

Overexcitability
'The most evident aspect of developmental potential is overexcitability (OE), a heightened physiological experience of stimuli resulting from increased neuronal sensitivities. The greater the OE, the more intense are the day-to-day experiences of life. Dąbrowski outlined five forms of OE: psychomotor, sensual, imaginational, intellectual and emotional. These overexcitabilities, especially the latter three, often cause a person to experience daily life more intensely and to feel the extremes of the joys and sorrows of life profoundly. Dąbrowski studied human exemplars and found that heightened overexcitability was a key part of their developmental and life experience. These people are steered and driven by their value "rudder", their sense of emotional OE. (seeing ur own experience put into words is a pretty interesting experience. hahahaa) Combined with imaginational and intellectual OE, these people have a powerful perception of the world. "I can hear the grass screaming when my dad cuts the lawn! I shout at him to STOP and he (again) just shakes his head. I can't bear to watch."
Although based in the nervous system, overexcitabilities come to be expressed psychologically through the development of structures that reflect the emerging autonomous self. The most important of these conceptualizations are dynamisms: biological or mental forces that control behavior and its development. "Instincts, drives and intellectual processes combined with emotions are dynamisms" (Dąbrowski 1972, 294). With advanced development, dynamisms increasingly reflect movement toward autonomy.
[on a side note:
They often can master concepts with few repetitions. They may also be physically and emotionally sensitive, perfectionistic, and may frequently question authority.
--->ha! they should have told our teachers about this :X]
ah well :)

-i have never walked on water
felt the waves beneath my feet but
at Your Word Lord i receive Your
faith to walk on oceans deep
and i remember
how You found me
at the very same place
all my failings surely would have drowned me
still You made a way
You are my freedom
Jesus You're the reason
i'm kneeling again at Your throne
where would i be
without You
here in my life
here in my life-

it's so easy to get disillusioned with the world
to have the desire to abandon it
after you see the many manifestations of the sins of mankind
and then you see the great limitations and boundaries
systemic problems
and you're fully aware that yes, you can reframe things
and you are supposed to be the one to help people reframe things
but ultimately,
so many things remain unchanged.
and of course, it's easy to say
world i don't want you anymore. 'cos you don't change.
i don't want you anymore 'cos the problem's too big for me to do anything about it.
the sentiments of many counsellors.
realizing that
'there's nothing i can do about it!'
but you keep providing hope.
you hold their disillusionment
you bear the brunt
and you keep providing hope.
and as human beings
we often ask then, who's going to hold the brunt for us?
when you hear of colleagues who're developing somatic symptoms as a reaction to their jobs, you ask. is it worth it?
the money isn't worth it.
lol.
and the disillusionment that comes along with it is strong.
thank God for God.
for being the hope.
THE hope.
and because of Him
you can then keep providing hope.
and you learn
to not personalize what you have heard.
learning to compartmentalize.
shift it aside first.
before making sense of it on a latter date.
:)
and you keep providing hope.
while wondering what sort of impact u can make at such an individual level.
hahaha :)
jiayou people! :)

world i don't want you anymore.

Carrot juice constitutes murder - arrogant worms
Listen up, brothers and sisters
Come hear my desperate tale
I speak of our friends of nature
Trapped in the dirt like a jail
Vegetables live in oppression
Served on our tables each night
This killing of veggies is madness
I say we take up the fight
Salads are only for murderers
Cole slaw's a fascist regime
Don't think that they don't have feelings
Just 'cause a radish can't scream
I've heard the screams of the vegetables (scream scream scream)
Watching their skins being peeled (having their insides revealed)
Grated and steamed with no mercy (burning off calories)
How do you think that feel ( bet it hurts really bad)
Carrot juice constitutes murder (and that's a real crime)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves (let my vegetables grow)
It's time to stop all this gardening (it's dirty as hell)
Let's call a spade a spade (it's a spade it's a spade it's a spade)
I saw a man eating celery
So I beat him black and blue
If he ever touches a sprout again
I'll bite him clean in two
I'm a political prisoner
Trapped in a windowless cage
'Cause I stopped the slaughter of turnips
By killing five men in a rage
I told the judge when he sentenced me
"This is my finest hour
I'll kill those farmers again
Just to save one more cauliflower"
How low as people do we dare to stoop
Making young broccolis bleed in the soup
Untie your beans, uncage your tomatoes
Set potted plants free, don't mash that potato, ah
I've heard the screams of the vegetables (scream scream scream)
Watching their skins being peeled (fates in the stir fry are sealed)
Grated and steamed with no mercy (you fat gourmet scum)
How do you think that feels (leave them out in the fields)
Carrot juice constitutes murder (V8's genocide)
Greenhouses prisons for slaves (yes your compost's a grave)
It's time to stop all this gardening (take up macramé)
Let's call a spade a spade (it's a spade it's a spade it's a spade)

me: 'so what i hear from you is that on one hand, you ..., yet on the other hand, you... there seems to be this internal difference which you are facing...'
student: (laughs) 'how can you read my mind like that?'
. satisfaction .
satisfaction. it happens when you consciously realize that you are using many different counselling skills in one session. consciously sieving out and choosing information to tackle.
it happens when your student opens up and shares so much more things because of your skills.
it happens when the students asks you things back in return.
it happens when you suggest something to work on, and the student agrees wholeheartedly with what you have suggested.
GRINS.
guess what? :D
i prayed before i went into the session XD

"To a child, divorce can seem like the death of a parent"
For a child whose parents are going through divorce, the reactions can be quite similar to undergoing the grief cycle while experiencing the death of a parent.
denial.
anger.
bargaining.
depression.
acceptance.
we may face the grief cycle when we cope with changes or loss as well. and sometimes a few stages repeat themselves over and over and over again. previously watched a video of a person tackling grief dealing with the loss of a spouse before.
grief is such an intriguing thing to explore. and such an intricate process to tackle.
grief. trauma.
i miss these :\

Just had a 50 min talk with Rachel :) hahaa. Same timing as a counselling session.
Before April, it was kind of hard to imagine why the turnover rate for school counsellors was high.
Now after 3 months in school, I know why.
hahaha.
I guess I'd still like to start up the system in school.
but my job scope is more of the responsive services cum developmental programmes.
as how one of my classmates puts it, the school system is 'sh***y' to counsellors.
you know something is wrong somewhere, when your classmateSSS want to switch back to being education officers, or to quit the system altogether :\
i'm griping.
bah.
no support:(
we can't properly counsel!
and sometimes you wonder about the qualifications of other counsellors :P
i'm super irritated 'cos i'm not getting what i signed myself up for.
oh.
it's called job satisfaction.
i'm not getting it.
i don't think it's tt bad though. i quite like interacting with the students (when i'm not in rtc). i enjoy counselling students.
i enjoy working with teachers.
but i think rtc just gives me a :\ feel.
maybe i need to go and think through more about what exactly i am disgruntled about.
my management's very nice though :)
my p and vp :)

Xin Ying thinks that people should be consistent. Perceived inconsistencies confuse her and cause her to have a desire to reject.
I have 'pata pata pata pon pata pata pon!' stuck in my mind :(
and i'm sleepy (again. hahahaa)
today my supervisor asked us who discovered water. hahaha. the answer had completely no link with the qn -.- lol. his answer was that he doesn't know who discovered water, but it's definitely not the fish (then i'm like, fish is not a who...).
anywayyyyyyy... his point (after having no point) was that fishes get so used to the water around them that they may not realize that they're not conscious of the fact tt they're in water till they're taken out of that water. as human beings, we're so absorbed in our culture that sometimes we do not realize/recognize it when discrimination takes place until we get taken out of our culture and are discriminated against ourselves :) which i thought was a good point.. though his riddle made no sense whatsoever to me :D hahahaa.
but he's a nice supervisor anyways :) and quite good :)
i'm cold :)
i always remember how they say if u're cold, and hungry and tired, it's easier for u to sin. hahaa. but i'm quite joyful at this moment, so maybe that's a buffer? :D so doesn't mean when we're tired and hungry and cold, we have the license to sin :)
^^
but i'm still cold and sleepy. hahaa. though not hungry.
- there was a lady all in white
holds me and sings a lullaby
she's nice to see and she's soft to touch
she says Cosette, i love you very much...-
hhahaa
got this song stuck in my mind at this moment.
it's interesting how nigel used citadels in his counselling session! :D

David once mentioned that he posed this question to his students in RP before..
Received this email from Ivy in school email today too..
A group of children were playing near two railway tracks, one still in use while the other disused. Only one child played on the disused track, the rest on the operational track.
The train is coming, and you are just beside the track interchange. You can make the train change its course to the disused track and save most of the kids. However, that would also mean the lone child playing by the disused track would be sacrificed. Or would you rather let the train go its way?
Let's take a pause to think what kind of decision we could make........ ........
Scroll down
Most people might choose to divert the course of the train, and sacrifice only one child. You might think the same way, I guess. Exactly, to save most of the children at the expense of only one child was rational decision most people would make, morally and emotionally. But, have you ever thought that the child choosing to play on the disused track had in fact made the right decision to play at a safe place?
Nevertheless, he had to be sacrificed because of his ignorant friends who chose to play where the danger was. This kind of dilemma happens around us everyday. In the office, community, in politics and especially in a democratic society, the minority is often sacrificed for the interest of the majority, no matter how foolish or ignorant the majority are, and how farsighted and knowledgeable the minority are. The child who chose not to play with the rest on the operational track was sidelined. And in the case he was sacrificed, no one would shed a tear for him.
The great critic Leo Velski Julian as well as Sourav who told the story said he would not try to change the course of the train because he believed that the kids playing on the operational track should have known very well that track was still in use, and that they should have run away if they heard the train's sirens.. If the train was diverted, that lone child would definitely die because he never thought the train could come over to that track! Moreover, that track was not in use probably because it was not safe. If the train was diverted to the track, we could put the lives of all passengers on board at stake! And in your attempt to save a few kids by sacrificing one child, you might end up sacrificing hundreds of people to save these few kids.
While we are all aware that life is full of tough decisions that need to be made, we may not realize that hasty decisions may not always be the right one.
'Remember that what's right isn't always popular... and what's popular isn't always right.'
Everybody makes mistakes; that's why they put erasers on pencils.

lol.
Chiew Lim happily told me today that next week we'll be going on excursions (a.k.a home visits).
i hope we stay in singapore for staff retreat! hahaha.
'cos the next day is GC! hahahaa.

feeling sleepy.
guess i can't sustain sleeping at 2am and waking up at 6.45am anymore. lol :)
wouldn't it be nice if school only starts at 10am? :)
and ends at 4.30pm :)
LOL.
work will be so much more enjoyable if it starts later : )
hahaaa. but then i guess we're already very fortunate to be paid sufficiently for our work :)

you know, sometimes you have a desire to do certain things, and you don't voice it out, but everything else you do stems out from that desire to want to bless in that area...
and when someone realizes, acknowledges it and affirms it,
it's a very liberating feeling.
it just makes u go 'wow'.
hahaa.
thanks you wenjiang :) (though u prob won't read this and won't know what i'm talking about).
thank you justin :)

sometimes i wonder about the futility of life.
hahaaa.
that the pursuits of so many things in life end up to nought.
i guess maybe tt's why sometimes i'm not so interested in doing things that doesn't seem to have continuity and longevity. lol.
that these things disinterest me very quickly.
but then again, i guess one'd never know the possibility of that thing having continuity and longevity. lol.
i'm babbling.

Was searching online for loving and giving.. hahahaa. to find a creative way to collect love offerings.. when i saw this:
'While giving is essential to loving, the ability to receive is what makes us lovable. If you're a great giver, but a lousy receiver, then you may be able to love, but you make it hard for yourself to be loved.'
ah :)
it's like allowing yourself to be vulnerable too.

hahaaa.
Suddenly recalled that long time ago, when i was young and innocent, i bought a can of whiskers cat food, opened the lid, and set it in front of a cat. and then i wondered why it'd not eat it, not realizing that the cat is unable to get the food out of the can.
hahahaha. poor cat.

actually till now, i'm still not sure if what i'm experiencing in school is so called normal.. hahaa. seems to be having the message that work place is supposed to be more supportive (in terms of having colleagues who'll be there to support you, and having someone who'll properly induct you). doesn't seem like i've had any proper induction/introduction. LOL.
i've still not gotten myself introduced to the school. hahahaa.
Sounds like more and more people are thinking of converting back to being an EO, or quitting the profession of a counsellor :S

Was looking through some photos.. and suddenly felt that it's such a pity that some of the smiling faces in the photos no longer smile so much now.. or rather, i don't even get to see them anymore.

Went down to nie today to return my overdue books :\
hahahaa.
felt like a waste of time to travel down to nie just to return books :S
anyway, met seokhui on the way down :) hahaa. was quite surprised to see her there. don't know why she's there though. LOL. moe scholar becoming teacher? :)
then saw bakemono and his gf! haha. bakemono's a good friend of mine in japanese tutorial class in the past :P so is his girlfriend :) i dunno his name 'cos i've always called him bakemono (of which his reply was bakamono). i do however, know his girlfriend's name :) very nice people :) bakemono's half crazy too. he curtseyed together with us during grad day. hohoho.
so i returned books :( paying for fines is a awful way of spending money :\
and i saw bakemono on the bus again -.-
lol
anyway, had a good catchup with him :) finding out from him where he and his gf are working at at this moment. ah. the world's different when you have to support yourself. hahahaa.
chi's happily sleeping against the wall :D
so cute!
HAHAHAA.
went to collect my wii set today as well.. but they said that it's been a long time since i ordered it, so they needed to fax the receipt over to verify my receipt o.o

Read a post about artists in the church from Jiali's blog which i felt was quite beautiful =) hahaa.
I wonder if there's a job which allows you to read books and write reviews on them. hahaa.
had a humbling afternoon yesterday :) but i learned a few things about myself, and a few things about the people around me. it's interesting :)
thanks for asking me about it :)

At the end of the day, we're all just normal human beings.
We all need someone to love.
We all need to know that someone loves us.
We have our strengths
And our weaknesses.. (which we may feel vulnerable in showing, thus we hide them at times).
We all have an innate sinful nature.
We're all prone to temptations (different ones, but nevertheless, still the general category of temptations).
We're able to do certain things (some very well, some not so well) and not be able to do others.
We need time alone (some much more than others) and we need to spend time with others (some much more than others too. hahaha)
We have the need to be appreciated.
We have the need to know that we're contributing to something.
:)
Come meet these needs in Christ and the community of His people :)

We need time alone (some much more than others) and we need to spend time with others (some much more than others too. hahaha)
We have the need to be appreciated.
We have the need to know that we're contributing to something.
:)
Come meet these needs in Christ and the community of His people :)
i'm held by Your love
upheld by Your strength
on Your shoulders You bore me
by Your faith i stand
cherished by You Lord
treasured in Your sight
so close to Your heart
held firm in Your hands

In a therapy session, you 'hold' the person so that any sense of abandonment, fears of rejection, feelings of danger is taken away.
i guess in a sense, maybe that's why we feel more comfortable sharing to some people and not to others.. 'cos perhaps we feel more 'held' by some, and not so by others. could be the way they react to us, or the things they say to us, or actions they've done in the past.
i was just thinking about how i always had to muster up a great effort to share to a particular friend of mine, and i realize that i don't feel 'held' by the person. as if i'm always gonna get rejected by her.
why ah?
so odd.

Q. What happened then?
A. He told me, he says, "I have to kill you because you can identify me."
Q. Did he kill you?
A. No.
Q. ...and what did he do then?
A. He came home, and next morning he was dead.
Q. So when he woke up the next morning he was dead?

Dear GOD, I didn’t think orange went with purple until I saw the sunset you made on Tuesday. That was cool! -Eugene

Maybe I should write down a 100 things to do too.
considering that my previous mental list of things to do in uni has kinda been finished.
Item no 1 can be to write up my 100 things to do =)

"Philosophers (and other users of logic) spend a lot of time and effort searching for and removing (or intentionally adding) ambiguity in arguments, because it can lead to incorrect conclusions and can be used to deliberately conceal bad arguments."
i was wondering why philosophers usually commit suicide.
i guess it might not be that they think too much.. and possibly was unable to come to an conclusion of sorts. no. i believe that each has probably come to conclude in his/her own way, their own answer and perspectives on different matters. it is probably then, that the reason why they may have commited suicide is 'cos regardless of how many conclusions or perspectives they have thought about to the various issues and questions in life, there exists more ambiguities than the conclusions formed.
and at the end of the day, perhaps to them, they realize the futility of it all.
and maybe that's why they write. so as to be able to lend meaning and to justify the time and effort spent in removing the ambiguity in the arguments.

my random playlist arranges songs nicely for me
it was 'frail' by jars of clay
then 'a voyage of tranquility'
then 'the fire thief' by Hem.
transits nicely.

i love it when it rains =)
the freshness of the cold air which reaches my nose is as delicious as delicacies spreading its flavour on the tongue.
it's like nose-candy. hahaa. as likened to eyecandy.
i love to listen to the sound of rain :)
it fills up the emptiness of the day, and fades off as background noise to help me concentrate on things better.
i love rain!

we had staff dinner yesterday night =)
my first staff dinner
hahaha
went there and dunno what to do. so joined the table with the admin staff and some people whom i lunch with :)
heee.

wonderful people :) hahaha.
the two empty chairs belonged to me and this animation instructor who teaches maya to the students. hahahaa. till now i still don't remember this name. hohoho.
was waiting to be served the whole night. hahahaa.
'cos dunno what to expect.
but quite interesting :) my table became the most havoc table. we were clapping along, cheering along, and laughing like mad. 'cos we have funky ivy (who loved the old love songs being performed by some of the other staff), and funky doris (who's the advocator of people dancing on stage) and funky aishah (who was trying to persuade chiewlim (the guy on extreme right). lol. ivy is really very funky =D hahahaa. she's very nice too :) and chiewlim's very serving. he kept serving us (drinks and pudding and whatnots).
interesting people =)
the vp ended up at our table at the end. hahaa. he said he saw 3 of his ex colleagues on the same day he saw me (on sunday at PS. hee).
the animation guy was commenting to me that it feels as if we're all attending a malay wedding ('cos had a couple of malay songs in the middle. hee). then i guess the mood switched to a chinese wedding (with 'yue liang dai biao wo de xin' being sung), and an english wedding (with L-O-V-E being sung), and subsequently an indian wedding O.o LOL. ^^
the programme's quite boring :D
hahaha
but it's great to know another side of the colleagues ^^ (hee. thanks justin for letting me know about the spelling mistake)
------------------------------
L is for the way you look at me
O is for the only one I see
V is very, very extraordinary
E is even more than anyone that you adore and..
ah. so that's E :)
-------------------------------
being in the opportune time and place was good for my role as a counsellor.
hahaha.
managed to listen to two different students and a mum :)

the sky is azure with big white clouds!:D
somehow the sky reminds me of weezieeeeeeee. hahahaa
and she stepped out into the wide open space
and realizes that
all the while
there was a lead ball being tied to her feet
of which the key to the lock that bound it there
belonged in her hands
and she saw the wide space
and she looked at the lead ball
and she realized that all the while
while she's been admiring everybody else who's running around in the wide space
she's been the one who held the key
and so she threw the key
and willed away the lock
and ran
and ran
and ran
and leaped
and then she spinned
round and round and round and round
and spinned
and danced
and leaped.
and with two hands reaching far into the sky
she smiled at the warm sunshine
and thanked her God for the wonderful things around her.

-You danced over me
while i was unaware
You sing all around
but i
never hear the sound
Lord I'm amazed by You
Lord I'm amazed by You
Lord I'm amazed by You
how You love me -
hahahaha
what a wonderful day :D
-----------------------
just got this song from Robert! LOL
saw this on his nick and asked him about it.
dedicating this song to all who's made my heart smile :D
thanks for the wonderful friendship and love and acceptance that all of you have given to me :D
from the same people who sang 'Hey there Delilah'

Alright :)
I found them :)
And coaxed them out.
And subsequently took a 30 min nap.
and woke up to a cooler air and gray skies.
And then I opened my door.
And curious students popped in :)
hahaha.
students who wondered who i am.
Which reminds me.
I really must get myself introduced :)
And I've not done my case notes.
hohoho.

Lol.
I realized that there're books in the career guidance room :)
Books which were quite familiar.. 'cos they're written by people like Josh Mcdowell... Shannon Ethridge...
And books on marriage preparation, parenting, living with home, school and community.
lol.
'cos it's also the SFE room. dun ask me what it is. i forgot.
some family education stuff.
-------
I think sometimes when you control your emotions for too long,
they get shut off and squirm somewhere where they can't really be found.
And when you tried to search for them, you realize that you can't find them.
hahahaa.
faints.
---------
Quite cool.
I see the newspaper cutting on David Hoe in the career guidance room.
Ain't it interesting to know the person in the newspaper cutting personally?
And to know how he was able to do it? :)
----------
I spent an entire day thinking.
lol.
This place is conducive for thinking :)
Wouldn't it be nice if I can stay here forever~
hahahaaa.
---------
and it still hurts though it's the right thing to do.
and i still can't find that which have gone to hide.

LOL
i got fed up today and decided to take matters into my own hands. hahaa.
a little rebellious.
but bleagh.
don't really care.
i operated on the 'this is my student. i'm in charge of their social emotional wellbeing. i can't counsel in the room which is associated with discipline.'
and so i went to take key, went counselling room. and counselled there.
it's so different counselling in the counselling room, and counselling in rtc :P
and then!
i learned that actually
i can use the SFE room for counselling!
that it is by right mine 'cos i'm in charge of career guidance.
oh?
i didn't know that.
though i did have hints that i can use it.
nobody told me that the room is mine :P
bleagh.
and yes.
the SFE room is SO MUCH BETTER than rtc as well.
so i got my room ^^. lol!
though i'll still be in the rtc. ah well.
just shows that everybody has their own agenda in the workplace.

Been wanting to type this out for some time. hahahaa.
With regards to patience.
In recent months, particularly this year, God's been growing me in the area of waiting and being patient.
I laughed out loud (literally) during the drama for yesterday's combined service at the 'wait, again?' part. hahahahhahaa.
my gosh.
maybe it started last yr. lol.
waiting upon God for direction as to whether I should stay in uni group or move on to YG.
waiting upon God for the results of my application for work.
then subsequently
waiting on God for people's hearts to change
waiting on God for people's minds to be awakened.
waiting for people to come back to God.
- I will bring praise I will bring praise
no weapon formed against me shall remain
I will rejoice I will declare
God is my victory and He is here-
I don't think I've ever done so much waiting in my entire life. LOL!
but yea. i'm starting to enjoy the waiting process :) hahaa. maybe 'cos I know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him. and I know what I'm waiting for are things that'll glorify God. so i'll wait.
I guess previously I may be a little impatient 'cos I neglected to see God's hand in this. hahahaa.
but yea :)
When I see a purpose to my waiting, waiting becomes enjoyable :)
may still be burdened, and sometimes troubled.
but will continue to commit all things I'm waiting on upon God.
God, may Your name continue to be praised and exalted :)

I really like the song 'we the redeemed' :D
It's such an apt reminder of so many things ^^
"We the redeemed" - Hillsongs
There is nothing like Your love
No exchange for all You gave
To be welcomed into life
So I can know the love it saves
Now forever to be loved
To walk with You for all my days
There’s no greater love than this
You are the Author and the Way
Pre-Chorus:
This is the sound of the redeemed
Rising up to praise the King
Our hope is in You
This is the sound of the redeemed
Rising up to praise the King
Chorus:
Singing glorious, glorious One You have saved us
Honour and Power and Praise to the Saviour
You are the Answer, You are the Answer
You come with power come with fire
As we lift Your name on high
And join with all the saints to sing
In bringing Honour to the King.
Bridge:
We the redeemed
Hear us singing
You are Holy
You are Holy

Realy felt very empowered and encouraged by the service yesterday. hahaaa. it reminded me of God's hand being in control of the situations I'm in. It reminded me of God's sovereignty. It reminded me of His power.
victory in Christ =)
much joy! and assurance!
(haha. i'm very sleepy. but i'm the only one at starbucks looking after the rest of the bags now. hahaa. wanna sleep :S)
Talking to jan last night reminded me of something God spoke to me during our uni-ya camp. hahahaa. i kinda forgot about it.. till he said something i said reminded me of what i said during uni-ya camp. LOL.
i typed it down in my phone though.
it was a revelation during the night out in the fields (when i was feeling grumpy and uncomfortable. hahahaa)
it was quite a :S revelation. hahahaa.
On 16 May 2009, 1:02am, I typed this down in my handphone.
We were supposed to think of two questions:
1) What God is doing in the season of my life with regards to the things I'm going through
2) What is God going to do in the next part of my life?
With regards to 1)
it was a few areas
a) testing of beliefs with regards to circumstances
b) knocking me to senses, not to depend on the relationships i have.
c) wariness of boundaries (oops. LOL)
d) dependence on Him alone.
with regards to 2) --> this is the :S part:
I wrote after praying through:
"Maybe God is going to bring me to a place of discomfort? Where all I can do is to trust in God. And where my beliefs will be tested to see what and how my reactions in these situations will be."
hohoho.
at that moment of time, I think I was really quite fearful.
hahahahahaaa.
but now things are starting to make a lot of sense ^^
the dots are being connected ^^
so enjoyable. hahahaaa.
intellectuals like to make sense of things. LOL.
and making sense of things expands the sight of my God :D

lol.
there's a student who came and asked if he could sit in the RTC to do his art drawing for exams.
Was a little suspicious when I saw him positioning his chair to face me, but figured that it could be him drawing something else.
Just peered over while he was sharpening his pencil and realized that he's sketching me.
LOL.
faints.
so honoured sia.
now have to continue acting like i never notice.
hahahahahahaa

It's getting depressing to find out that your fellow classmates from the same counselling course are switching back to being a teacher/leaving the service.
:(
lol.
but can understand la.
:(
lol.
but can understand la.
take heart xinying! take heart! =)
Was feeling a little upset (actually not a little:P) over some counselling case just now. but have taken the time out to reflect and pray about it (short prayer though).
They should supply us with funds to see our own counsellor! hahahaa.
Having a chinese praise song in my mind now. hahaa.
Directly translated it'll say something like
'Having Christ's heart as my heart,
Using His eyes to see the world,
The world needs you and me
to fill it up with love-
true :)
it's no wonder that self care is an official 1/4 of my job scope. LOL.

I love You, O Lord, my strength

I love You, O Lord, my strength
I am wild awake and going mad.
My mind is like a translucent solid cube with rounded corners, with contained chaos.
You can't break the cube, but neither can you do anything about the chaos within the cube.
Purple, pink, blue, black.
With the cube giving off a soft yellow glow.
My rationality is overwhelming.

it's therapeutic to meet up with my dsc7 classmates :D
hahahaa
had my aed-c counselling appraisal framework training today at Spring. it turned out that nigel, charlene, lynn and carolyn were in the same room as me for the training. hahaa. samuel, steven, raj and rachel were in another one. lol.
think if you put all 9 of us together, we'll be 2 tables of noisy people. as it is, seperating us ensured that there was only one table of noisy people in the room i'm in. hahahaa. that's us =D
we're the crazy bunch of counsellors on practicum who made a lot of noises in class, participated actively in the games and decided to sneak out of the building for lunch. LOL.
so fun!
hahaaaa.
very therapeutic to see them. hahahaa.
