Imagine you have 10 TV's and 10 radios on different channels and 10 little kids jumping up and down saying "Look at me! Look at me!" all at full volume from the time you wake up until the time you go to sleep. The less interesting something is, the less likely you'll be able to keep it in focus. You have to constantly fight to keep yourself on track because you never know what's going to grab your attention next. If something REALLY interesting happens your mind hyper-focuses on it and blocks out EVERYTHING else until the excitement passes. It's pretty much the only time you feel in control.
